UK Independant Film - Question & Answer

Working in Film -

Explain why the film-makers think that a low budget independent film should be a genre film?

Because, it is more drawn to a specific genre, and doesn't target towards multiple different genres. A specific genre targets towards a specific audience as every genre is categorised into sections.

Why do you think genres are important (a) to the film industry (b) to film-makers and (c) to audiences?
Genres are important as they will be able to aim at a specific narrative that's centred mainly around that genre and its important for the film industry purposefully so they know what type of film is being made and what will commonly be featured within the specific genre. Its important for film makers as they can do anything that's centred around that genre and if its one specific genre it will be able to compete against other specific independent films. Its so important for the audience as it will instantly gravitate towards them or draw them away from the film based on the invested interest and the stars that are used in the film.

Do you think genres are more important to the film industry than audiences?
Its more important based upon what the story/narrative of the film is and if it will be a hit or not and how much is going to be invested into the film and who is going to be featured in the film etc.

Why do you think audiences are more likely to watch a genre film (like sci-fi)?

Its because it gravitates towards a specific audience and it will be about a certain subject etc.

Production -
Why was filming using digital cameras important?
As filming digital it helps make it easier to transfer clips and it is better for filming specific genres like if its a documentary as it has a more realistic raw feeling compared to a more film based camera that has digital elements and more quality which can be edited using CGI. The contrast and depending on the lens depth can be various and can impact on the outcome on how film is shot.

Why are ‘high production values’ important for a low-budget film?
As they are competing against high budget films and low budget films want to make sure they can scrap that high quality so that even though its a low budget film it can be as amazing as what I high budget film could/would be and so forth.

How long did it take to film The Machine? How does this compare with other films you know? Can you find out how long a major US blockbuster takes to film?
It took 4 and a half weeks to film The Machine and it compares with other films based upon the editing quality, camera quality etc. A major blockbuster film can take longer to film based upon the amount of money that is being invested into the film.
What are the various ways the film-makers tried to achieve that high production value and how do you think they achieved that?
Based upon how they are going to far limits to achieve a well crafted film. By aiming to get specific things that they want to use in their production and the people. Getting top quality professional skilled individuals.
What do the film-makers suggest is the importance of editing to a film?
The importance of film making is getting enough footage to edit with and getting skilled people to edited the footage/clips etc.
