Case Study: I, Daniel Blake - Film Industry (Indie)

I. Daniel Blake is an independent social realist film directed by renowned filmmaker Ken Loach (Kes,Raining Stones, Sweet Sixteen etc.)
It is a UK/French co-production, it received funding from the BFI and BBC Films.
Exhibited at many film festivals.




Power and Media Industries - Curran and Seaton Theory - Idea that the media is controlled by a small number of companies primarily driven by the logic of profit and power.
Media concentration generally limits or inhibits variety, creativity and quality.
Idea that the more socially diverse patterns of ownership help to create the conditions for more varied and adventurous media productions.




I, Daniel Blake shows awareness and isn't really about the profit or power as its main focus. Its more about community and the people and their power so, it contradicts the Curran and Seaton Theory. The film is more expressive and has its own creativity and individualism. It may not be targeted towards a mass audience however, it does target personal and tough issues and is realistic and links to the known indie films and is very diverse. Which is aimed at a specific demographic audience.






Social and Political Contexts -


The films context is about employment and support allowance and how health is impacted on whether someone is employed to work or not. This is also, linked to other factors as age which is presented within the film as the main character is frustrated to learn that his doctor was not contacted about the decision, and applies for an appeal, a process he finds difficult because he must complete forms online and is not computer literate and the film is all about jobseekers and the welfare system.




How was the film funded? -
The film is funded by the E.U. and supported by the British Film Institute and BBC Films - (Inform, Educate and Entertain - The Remits) and BBC is less profit driven.




How was it produced (and by who)? -
It was produced by the director Ken Loach, producer Rebecca O'Brien and written by Paul Laverty on a low budget.

    How was it distributed (and by who)? -







    It was distributed by the companies of eOne Films in the UK and  Le Pacte in France. The help of trailers and the # through the internet to spread the message and film. Newspapers used to target the working class audience and the movie.
    Who is the target audience, how do you know this? -
    The target audience would be older teenagers and adults especially the lower class people, because they can understand about this on a specific level and know what the topic of what the films is about based upon it being centred around class and money and politics. A higher class would based upon the political aspects more and make change unlike, lower class who relate to it and search for self-identity (Blumlier and Katz).






    What role might the director, Ken Loach, have played in the success of the film? -


    The director has power over how the film is presented and the angle in which people are portrayed within the film and if the right messages and meanings are being sent across to the audience. Mentioning his name in the trailer and what he is trying to get out towards the world through his words and actions and trying to get his name out there through his work. He is a highly political campaigner.


    How might audiences have been active consumers in the distribution and circulation of the film?  -
    Through the hashtag of the film, it helps the circulation and distribution of the film through the free promo and trending which helps create more buzz and talk about the movie. As well as the #IAmDanielBlake. Younger audience actively search as consumers for marketing, rather then an older audience. Getting audiences to participate to get the film out there and advertised.
